Dominican Republic Trip Review | Bahia Principe Ambar, Horseback Swimming & Travel Struggles

We just got back from our trip to the Dominican Republic and we have a lot to share!

From the moment we landed, the trip had its highs and lows. We dealt with some hiccups like the tricky Dominican immigration document and the fact that Southwest Airlines doesn’t offer non-stop flights to the DR. Once we arrived, we stayed at Bahia Principe Ambar Luxury Resort, one of several Bahia properties in the area.

✨ Highlights & Lowlights

Resort Stay: The swim-up suites were incredible (we’re hooked on these from now on!). But the “luxury” service and food fell flat compared to our previous trips to Puerto Vallarta’s Hotel Mousai and Garza Blanca.

Excursions: Horseback riding on the beach and actually swimming with the horses was unforgettable – though next time we’ll wear pants (chafing + galloping = ouch).

Resort Activities: We enjoyed karaoke, a Dominican cultural festival, and the all-white concert party. Sadly, most of the other entertainment was underwhelming, and only one restaurant (Limbo) stood out.

Airport Experience: The VIP Lounge at Punta Cana Airport was a trip-saver – yes, it has a pool! But in classic travel fashion, we ended the podcast abruptly after realizing our flight was cancelled.

If you’re planning a Dominican Republic getaway, especially at Bahia Principe Ambar, you’ll want to hear the full story.
