I Didn’t Expect THIS From a Dominican Republic City!

I’ve spent years covering life, real estate, and opportunity in the Dominican Republic — and I’ll be honest, I was completely wrong about this city.

In this video, I take you behind the scenes of Santiago de los Caballeros, a Dominican city quietly transforming with major infrastructure, modern transit, healthcare investment, luxury real estate, and serious capital flowing in. From a $300M airport expansion to a brand-new monorail system, this is a side of the Caribbean most people never see.

If you’ve only thought about the Dominican Republic through the lens of resorts and beaches, this video will challenge that mental model.

  1. Thank you for highlighting my dear city, Jamie, where I just moved back with my family and we’re loving it; really living the dream! My husband fell in love with Santiago since the first time he visited the DR; he was amazed by the mountain view all around. And there’s no better place for families in the country (prove me wrong).

I passed by Charo Decoraciones almost daily on my way to my grandma’s. If you look across the street, there’s a very important statue there; it’s the sculpture of a marchanta, the women that used to pass by our homes riding a donkey every morning selling fruit and vegetales.

We are dear friends with the Blanco Ochoa family, owners of La Casita, amazing people, and we furnished our home with them; it will feel like betrayal buying from Charo 😂 but I definitely have it on my list to go there looking for more items for my home.

There are older open neighborhoods in Santiago that are equally safe and upscale. My husband and I love nostalgia, so we chose to move into a classic Santiago “mansion” in Cerros de Gurabo with a beautiful mountain view.

I have to correct something, out of duty. The hospital shown while he said Union Médica, it’s actually Instituto Materno Infantil y Especialidades, where my father has his practice. It’s much older than Union Médica and it’s going through major expansion right now. That whole block is that hospital’s buildings. Union Medica is just a few meters down across the avenue, and is huge too.

Well, I could write a whole essay about Santiago, so that’s it for now 😂

  2. Funny thing is all the video's Jaime does about Punta Cana we just went there 2 weeks ago but while there we actually paid off our Condo that is in Santiago!! Even went to the Jellyfish resturante thanks to Jaime's video there!

  3. Why I'm so glad my wife who is from Santiago we bought a condo almost 10 years ago and just paid it off 100%. Thanks to all this development Santiago is going to boom!

  4. I love Santiago, is alwys so clean, The only thing that is stopping me moving there is that they use the "i" while speaking spanish and i dont want that my kids get used to this accent.

  5. Holy Shit! These mansions are so amazingly beautifully designed,E'mmmm! Now you'll need to do some special courses about bathrooms!😂😂🤣😅😅

  6. Santiago undoubtedly has a very promising future with all those major infrastructure projects that are under development. Thank you for showing the heart of the city🙌🏻🇩🇴

  7. Yep, I lived there for 3.5 years. For families, to me is the number one place, only downside is the traffic, is bananas there. People are good and the city has everything you need.

  8. Santiago está en pleno desarrollo hermosa ciudad corazón ♥️ excelente reportaje de la ciudad 🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴

  9. @jamie thank you for sharing about my beautiful DR and inspiring so many people who have been dreaming about living there or thinking about leaving the US. I just got back from DR and my fiance and I continue with our plans to get married there and to also buy a home there. There is no place where we are happier and feel more at peace. With everything happening in the US and the cruelty on display daily in the media here, knowing that there is another place we can go and live happily gives us great comfort and motivates us to get it done ASAP.

  10. They’re showing the tourist target parts of Santiago. The real Santiago is an extremely convoluted town, highly noisy with motorcycles without mufflers, old cars polluting, so much so that there is a black coat of dust on everything. Santiago is mostly agrarian with metal lottery shacks every couple of blocks, abandoned dogs and cats and people trashing water/pop bottles, food containers and garbage everywhere. There is total lack of respect for other people’s rights and they think their lack of education and manners is a cultural thing as if it was enticing. I’ve lived here the past year and a half and it has been very stressful. The only good part is that some people are very kind, helpful and friendly.

  11. I think it’s a stupid mistake people when they moved back home and then they bring back their furniture with them instead of getting them there, being that they are so many beautiful furniture that also adapt to the climate and home style, not only that, they also pay very expensive to bring the old furniture, with what they can get it new over there

  12. I hate malls and shopping, my wife would love it, but it is high end and beautifully done. Santiago looks beautiful and I would love to visit it one day. Great video right out of life styles of the rich and famous.

  13. I'm Dominican American and my parents are from Santiago. It's nice to see what I would call my "mother" city grow. I definitely wouldn't mind buying one of those $700,000 homes.
