Dominican Republic Proposes Tax Refunds to Boost Shopping Tourism!

Dominican Republic Proposes Tax Refunds to Boost Shopping Tourism! The Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores) is pushing a new initiative to enhance shopping tourism by offering tax refunds to visitors. This proposal would allow tourists to receive a refund of the Value Added Tax (ITBIS) on purchases made during their stay, similar to Spain’s system.

Aguie Lendor, the executive VP of Asonahores, emphasized that this could significantly increase tourist spending and benefit local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and shops. The proposed system would enable tourists to recover 18% of ITBIS on qualifying purchases, making the Dominican Republic more appealing to high-spending visitors.

With around ten million visitors in 2023, this regulation could drive the country’s tourism revenue past the US$10,000 million mark by providing better incentives for tourist spending. Learn more about this exciting development and its potential impact on the Dominican Republic’s economy!
