Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Hawaii are leading global tourism headlines in August 2025 with record growth and spending, while Hurricane Erin disrupts the U.S. East Coast. Mexico welcomed an extraordinary 47 million visitors in just seven months, highlighting its emergence as a global powerhouse. Popular destinations like Cancún, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, and Guadalajara are drawing unprecedented crowds. Beyond numbers, Mexico is embracing voluntourism, joining countries such as the U.S. and Portugal in offering travellers opportunities to work with rangers in conservation zones.

The Dominican Republic also reached a milestone, recording over 7 million international arrivals fuelled by demand from the U.S., Canada, Spain, and South America. Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, and eco-tourism regions are experiencing strong growth, positioning the country as a leading Caribbean hub.

In the Pacific, Hawaii recorded nearly 2.5 million visitors in the second quarter of 2025. Though arrivals remained flat, visitor spending soared past $5 billion. The growth is powered by domestic U.S. travellers spending more per day while international markets such as Japan and Canada continue a slower recovery.

Meanwhile, U.S. airports in Chicago, Boston, Nashville, and Denver have reported record traffic. These cities are becoming popular alternatives to traditional giants like New York and Las Vegas, showing how travel patterns are diversifying.

But not all news is positive. Hurricane Erin is threatening the U.S. East Coast, from the Outer Banks to New England. Airlines have issued waivers, and hotels expect major cancellations at the height of peak season. The hurricane highlights the increasing impact of extreme weather on travel.

Together, these stories reveal the dual reality of today’s tourism industry: booming growth in some regions, matched by growing risks in others.
