Ridgway’s Hawk, female, Parque Nacional los Haitises, Dominican Republic, rare Endemic,

This was one of those rare endemics Evie and I were hoping to see in the Dominican Republic. Miguel landestoy our superb guide has been involved with the Hawk research project for several years and took us to the village at the centre of the conservation effort. Within minutes we heard a female calling. She had 2 near fledged youngsters and was calling in the male. He arrived with a lizard shortly after but kept some distance away. She went off and collected the lizard and took it back to the young. This female had been colour-ringed in a nest 3 years before on this reserve. This was on the 12th March 2018. The local villagers take great pride in this rare bird nesting near the village.
