Let's be honest Jamie, you don't like Santiago much because you're a gringo that feels out of place there. Not bashing you or anything. You make great fantastic videos, I have lived on and off in Punta Cana for the last 12 years. But the best and most economical city in DR is Santiago. You would forget beaches ever existed living there. The most beautiful Dominicans also come from that area as well. Santiago real-estate is as better than Santo Domingo or Punta Cana. & Half priced! If I ever decide to move to DR permanently, Santiago will be my first choice.

I have to agree. I would not live in Santiago. I must say i remember when Santiago was a town. I loved it then, but it became a city it lost me. Santiago basically went from a town to a city with very little planning. On the other hand, Punta Cana is being developed very orderly with much better housing. It’s a no brainer. Thx for the good contents. You always bring relevant stuff.
I live in Sedona, AZ right now been here for 23 years. But I’m really considering moving to Punta Cana is such a magical place.

When people ask if they have a Whole Foods in dr, I think these people don’t realize that a Whole Foods wouldn’t work in dr because most of the stuff is organic in dr unlike all of the preservatives in the us
Santiago is a "workers city" all its life. You work either to the big corps or the tons of zonas francas in the city, or as many of us establish their own shop. It's boring for expats, but amazing for locals who want tranquilo life, going out on Sundays with kids and have loads of space to run and exercise without the contamination in Santo Domingo.
NOTICE: I do emphasis on "familiy" thing, as difference of other big cities in Santo Domingo everything summarizes to your family background and where are you really from, no matter the class. Especially on work opportunities. They used to be very NIMBY until the 2010's. And, YES… It's not a city for passport bros. We don't need them. Bless their heart!
It's a city for families, and a good bunch of expats (brazilians, venezueleans, haitians, americans, puertorricans) have been in this area over the last 15-20 years and love it to be here because it's sooo tranquilo and organized compared to other regions/cities of DR. Santiago has its own pace of doing things differently to SDQ or PUJ. And yes, traffic has been changing since Covid thanks of the rapid pace of construction happening especially at the east entrance of the city (HOMS, Canabacoa, Hispanoamericana, Villa Maria areas).
A thing: cost of living is way low as being a big city of 1M people, but that's changing and… personally don't like it.
Jamie, I'm from Santiago. The city is for those who like cosmopolitan life, surrounded by mountains, business, industries, farms, agriculture and tobacco. Best cigars are from there. DR is not only beaches. Spent more time there and you will see.

Ramdom fact about santiago Jamie. It has the oldest tree🌳 in the whole island. The place is called Monumento Natural La Ceiba. The Tree has about 1,000 years old.

Santiago is a working city, a lot free trade zones with manufacturing and service industries. Many other industries and businesses too. The north side of the city is more countryish and the mountains offer a very nice place to live. The city is cooler than Santiago Domingo and the beaches. Overall cheaper to live, for being a city. You can find a lot of restaurants. Not much of a tourist destination, but does have some nice places to see. Jaime, if you came here Santiago on a Saturday, it’s the busiest day of the week, traffic wise, many are out shopping and running errands. I also agree, foreigners are pretty safe in the DR. Bávaro and Punta Cana are nice, similar to many places in the US. Family unity is much stronger and better. Men are men and women are women, it works well for most. Being a relatively small island, you can visit every point within a few hours, beaches and mountains, plains, rivers, all of it. Overall the quality of life here is much better than the US.
My wife lives there, and I love Santiago only 1 hr from the beach the mountains are nice
